Schumer V D-Amato Essays - Chuck Schumer, , Term Papers

Schumer V D-Amato In one of 1998's most costly, caustic senate races, New York candidates Charles Schumer and Alfonse D'Amato battled it out with negative campaign ads, personal slurs, and attention on previous political mistakes. Yet somewhere among the mud-slinging and personal attacks some issues emerged, of which education became a top priority. Schumer and D'amato both realized the importance of education to New York voters and therefore the necessity of addressing the issue in each of their campaigns. D'amato promised to reform a dysfunctional school system, by improving the quality of teachers, which he blamed for many of the problems. Schumer, conversely, sought to improve the current, well-functioning system, with increased funding and standards for students (Saunders, 1998). Although both candidates were forced to address their contrasting views on of education as a response to public pressure, the issue was clouded by the negative campaign and discussed mainly in the context of the other's past political actions. Education became such an important issue in this senate race because New York City's recent rejuvenation and economic boom has shifted New Yorker's focus from social issues such as crime and welfare to those of education and taxes. New York has previously been a state politically divided between the north and south on many issues, but education is one that unites them. With many educated citizens of upstate New York fleeing for more promising academic territory and downstate's hope of retaining an educated middle class, education reform has gained importance throughout the entire state. A Quinnipiac College poll asking New Yorkers to name the single most important problem facing the state resulting in 17% pointing to education, with only 7% singling out crime (Dolman, 1998). This prompted each candidate to address the issue in his campaign without the fear of alienating any specific district, even though neither of them had focused on education in their political pasts (Nagourney 2, 1998). Schumer and D'amato responded to the public's wishes and both aimed at capturing the support of the broadest number of voters, neither of them willing to risk overlooking such an important issue. Schumer, who touted a classically democratic education plan, threatened D'amato who consequently went full force with a plan of his own (Dolman, 1998). D'amato, the incumbent was supported by the Republican Party, but his campaign tactics were a little more aggressive than many of his republican supporters had hoped. Contrastly, Schumer was strongly supported by his party and stuck to their values concerning most issues. D'amato moved to blamed the shortcomings of the public school's on teachers' unions (Nagourney 2, 1998). By challenging the unions, he provoked the wrath of the United Federation of Teachers (UFT), knowing he would not have gained their support anyway. His headstrong, aggressive manner of campaigning became clear when he supported mandatory testing to ensure teacher competency, renewable rather than lifelong tenure, and pay based on merit. This was an open attack on teachers, and stirred much opposition among them. D'amato also knew that he wouldn't be supported by teachers and proceeded with his full-fledged attack on them. As a result he was depicted as somewhat of an enemy of public education, but also as taking a distinctive, fresh, yet gutsy, view on a crucial issue in an attempt to give himself an edge in the competitive campaign (Dolman, 1998). He also openly opposed Schumer and the Democratic Party in supporting government funded vouchers to offset tuition at private and parochial schools. D'amato's popularity increased for a short time during his ads supporting this and his evidence of voucher's benefits from a study done in New York City's public school system. With all of his tough campaigning, wily strategies, and massive fund-raising attempts, D'amato's chances of reelection were optimistic. However, his opponent matched him in intensity, nearly in money, and fought back with just as many negative ads and accusations (Sullivan, 1998). Schumer, playing the safer side of the fence in the nature of his education platform, supported teachers (his own mother was a teacher), even promising to forgive teacher's student loans after five years of teaching in order to attract great teachers. He called for more spending for schools to hire more teachers, rebuild deteriorated building and start

Effects of Depth and Sediment Concentration on the Penetration of Photosynthetically essays

Effects of Depth and Sediment Concentration on the Penetration of Photosynthetically essays Effects of Depth and Sediment Concentration on the Penetration of Photosynthetically Introduction The purpose of this study plan is to measure the effects of light on sedimentary particles in water. This study plan will include information pertaining to equipment, procedures, and analysis. This plan will also discuss problems that could arise during the sampling. Objectives The objective of this study is to observe whether sedimentary accumulation at various depths will effect the penetration of light energy. One reason for monitoring light penetration is to determine if sufficient energy is available for photosynthesis. This energy is effected by the amount of sedimentation that is suspended in the water. In order to ensure the data's scientific validity this study needs to include the main principles. These include selecting a control; a control will be the measurement that all other data is compared to. Second, the selection of the sample sites must be non-bias and random. This ensures that the experiments are not predictable or foreseeable. Finally the experiments must be described in great detail so that they can be replicated at a later date. Literature Energy is distributed throughout the worlds oceans in several usable forms. The heat transmitted during absorption is responsible for ocean waves, temperature and currents. Light penetration in water will measure in units of quanta. This measurement refers to the amount of sunlight that penetrates the water at various depths. The light energy is absorbed and scattered by suspended particles, dissolved substances, and the water itself (USGS). Other factors include attenuation coefficient: rate at which light decreases with depth. This means that each site studied may have a different attenuation coefficient. An example of a high coefficient would indicate a rapid decrease in light penetration, therefore, high sedimentation. Another factor to be aware o...

They address themselves to the conflict-ridden discursive traditions in the push and pull of ascription and achievement. Individually, these new studies cover much new ground, but when placed in conversation with each other and with past debates, they help us in mapping the territory in which black music acquires its political place and its cultural meaning. Among his impressive achievements of six solo rap albums, over 30 singles, significant roles in six movies and a body of poems anthologized, is his Hit song â€Å"Changes†. Tupac was clearly a performer with multi-dimensional abilities whose contributions to his art deserved to be the best for studying from a variety of disciplinary perceptions. â€Å"The music, sounds, and lyrics from some of Hip Hop’s most talented writers and performers have resulted in what has undeniably become the one cultural institution that urban youth rely on for representation, honesty keeping it real and leadership.† (Walter Edwards) Tupac Shakur’s song â€Å"Changes† presents a reflection of the today’s darker music influence on a life which is suffering in the rough battleground of urban poverty, coupled with the social and political ideas of Black Americans. However his main emphasis is upon the central behaviors which is focused on Blacks, including its rich vernacular language, its hooligan subculture and the crime, violence and nihilism which result from poverty and social neglect. All he has talked about in his song â€Å"Changes† is the humiliating attitude of Americans towards blacks. He focused on two main things, â€Å"Poverty† and â€Å"the fate of

Child temperaments and parenting styles - Essay Example e to act as friends to their children and the children with the flexible temperament work with the parent developing a plethora of room for the development and growth of the kids. The children consider their parents as warm and low in control to indicate high levels of trust, and the child is able to confide in the parent (Richters 22). On the other hand, children of the highly permissive parenting style may end up lacking the necessary self-control since the parents expect nothing from them. The flexible children with permissive parents become impulsive and may live life with no definite direction. Children with flexible temperaments and with permissive parents develop into domineering and stubborn adults who do anything to achieve what they desire. The behavior gets developed due to the parent’s understanding nature. However, parents with permissive parenting styles with children with flexible temperament give more attention to their children’s activity while maintaining a distance not to control most aspects (Richters 22-23). Some of the major cities of Jharkhand are Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, Bokaro, Sindri, Deoghar, Hazaribagh and Gumla. According to some writer, they said that there was already geo political and cultural entity called Jharkhand even before the period of Magadha Empire. Now I am going to tell you about what is retail? Retail: Retail derived from a French word retailer which means to break bulk. Retail consist of all activities involved in the marketing of goods and services directly to the consumer for their personal, family and house hold use. General Description Now my topic for term paper is Jharkhand and I am going to open a Flower shop in Bokaro steel city of Jharkhand. Name of my store is BUDS and BLOSSOMS. Goals and Objectives of a Flower Shop Mission: BUds and Blossoms will use the technology to target the customer and differentiate from the other traditional retail and on-line florists by offering flower gift programs with better service such as customer can select the specific delivery dates, tangibility and customer also specify the color, scents etc. Objective of a flower shop: Objectives of my shop are following: The main objective of my shop is to fulfill the customer wants and give them better product so that customer will satisfy. The second objective is to gain 10% profit. To increase sales. And to generate maximum revenue. About my shop: Buds and Blossoms firstly target the audience within the market. According to Emerson he said that certain things have not changed. Some of the most successful businessmen still have trouble purchasing gifts especially flowers for their wives, fiancà ©es and for their girl friends. So Buds and Blossoms provide them fresh and beautiful flowers for their wives etc. I will open my shop in Bokaro steel city in Jharkhand because in this city most of the population is youngster and they like flower as a most attractive gift for their girl friends or wives. And the shop will target the higher level of income on loved ones. Buds and Blossoms mainly target the Valentines Day, anniversary and birthday etc. and I think fresh flower is the easiest way to speak the feelings of your heart. Buds and Blossoms also provide restaurant facility. And I will also give the customer the better service and flowers so that people can trust on my shop. And to open the shop I will see the following factors: Store location: As Buds and Blossoms open a small gallery on that place where the people usually go so that they can see the gallery and would like to visit my gallery. Buds and Blossom plans to open in June and cover 600 square feet. One third space is used for retail and other space is used for storage and restaurant etc. and we are also providing the free parking so that people can easily visit to my store because sometime people cant visit the shop because they cant provide them parking service. Store design: As we know that customer can easily attract by the exterior design of the gallery or a shop. Buds and Blossoms also provide discount facility to their commercial customers. Marketing plan: Buds and Blossoms mainly target the youngster of the Bokaro city as I mentioned earlier that youngster prefer flower as gift for their girlfriend and for their wives. So our main focus on youngster of the city. As we are opening our new business so I want to achieve minimum 50% of the market share as a florist. Positioning strategies: Buds and Blossoms positioned in their customer by giving some extra benefit, high quality, high quality floral arrangements and personalized service. And Buds and Blossoms also plans to create a unique shopping experience with its floral design gallery which is located in an up and coming arts district area for making poisoning in the customer mind. Current demand in the market: As we know that people like to give flower on anniversary and in the party but there is no any retail shop for the flowers but people demand is high. So rich people demand for the special flowers. So it means the current demand for the flowers is more. Consumer preference and product development: As we know that today people more prefer flowers as a gift so the consumer preference about the flower is more and this preference is also continue in the future. The product development is also high because rich people and business mainly prefer the flower as a gift so the product development is high in present and as well as in the future. Opportunity for the business: As we all know that mainly in India that there has not many flower gallery or a retail shop for the flower so this become an opportunity for me to open a retail shop of the flower for the youngster of the Bokaro city. This is the big opportunity for my business. Barriers for the business: Following are barriers that came into the business: First is that people in India the medium class people thought that flowers are not sufficient as a gift? They usually prefer costly gift and a big gift for the party. So it means they cant prefer the flower due to this sales decrease. Secondly people never trust on the retailer easily. And the third is that it is difficult to capture the minimum 50% of market share as a florist. Solution for the barriers: First is that attracting the people through advertisement? Second is that using some special arrangements for the people? Some factors that affect my business are following: Change in economy: If the economy changes then it affect my business. Change in consumer perception: if the perception of the customer changed then it badly affects my business. Change in technology: if in the future some other technology arises then people prefer that technology more then it also affects my business. Promotional strategies: First promotional strategy is trough advertisement. Means through advertisement we can attract customer and promote our product. The other strategy for promotion is direct selling means to interact the customer for the promotion of the gallery and the product. And the third strategy is by indirect sales means by organizing some events etc. So I think through this we can promote our product or our flower gallery. Operational plan: Store location: As Buds and Blossoms open a small gallery on that place where the people usually go so that they can see the gallery and would like to visit my gallery. Buds and Blossom plans to open in June and cover 600 square feet. One third space is used for retail and other space is used for storage and restaurant etc. and we are also providing the free parking so that people can easily visit to my store because sometime people cant visit the shop because they cant provide them parking service. Layout: Generally, a florists shop will contain a large no of flowers. Sometimes it displayed on the street or will have a large plate glass window to display the flowers. Generally to keep the flower fresh shoppers kept the flower in the cooler or in the water. They also kept them in vases or other containers. My shop has a cooler near the front of the shop with glass window so that customers can easily see the flowers. And Buds and Blossoms have a back section for the decoration of the flower. Key supplier: Key supplier means where we purchase the raw material in this case key supplier means that where we are getting the flower. So I get flower from the Gardner of that particular area and the nursery located in that particular area that are the key supplier of my store. Credit policy: Credit policy is that when we gave the product on credit to the customer. So I follow that policy in some situation means that I will give credit facility to the commercial customer of my gallery. Store management: Store management is very important for a store. To become a top florist store manager the store management is important. To manage the store firstly there is total integration. Means every detail from a flower order needs to be shared with every part of the shop which requires information at the right time in order to handle the proper flower order. And by using new technology we can maximizes sales and reduces costs. I think through this I can manage the store. Merchandising management: Merchandising management includes such areas as salesmanship, types of flower such as jasmine, rose etc., advertising and promoting our floral business, marketing and display window. These all are merchandise of the store so its knowledge is important to make money. Financial plan: As we know that to start a business we require adequate money for the business. So to start a flower shop following are the assumption that should consider: Underlying assumptions: The flower shop will have annual revenue of growth of 16% per year. The total capital spend on the business is 30 crores. I will acquire 10 crores of debt funds to develop the business. I have take loan of 10 years with the 9% interest rate. In the depression or recession the revenue of the gallery should may decline as depend on the market condition or consumer preference. Sources of funds: Equity contributions Management investment 15, 00, 00,000 Total equity financing 15, 00, 00, 000 Debt share 10, 00, 00, 00 Total debt financing 10, 00, 00, 00 Preference share 5, 00, 00, 000 Total preference financing 5, 00, 00, 000 Total financing 30, 00, 00, 000 Break even analysis: In this we assume the running costs which include rent, utilities and an estimation of other running costs. The following chart shows what we need to sell per month to break even, according to these assumptions: Break even analysis Monthly Revenue Break even $ 5, 085 Assumptions: Average percent variable cost 30% Estimated monthly fixed cost $3, 560

Humorous Wedding Roast †The Groom’s Odd Behavior this Evening :: Wedding Toasts Roasts Speeches

Humorous Wedding Speech – The Groom’s Odd Behavior this Evening Good afternoon Ladies and Gentlemen - My name is Ron and I am the best man. Now, you may have heard said that being a best man is like being asked to lead the troops into battle - it's a great honour, but nobody really wants to do it. Well, I only agreed on the condition that it wouldn’t interfere too greatly with my own enjoyment of the wedding day, in particular the free food and drink. But as it happens, I’ve not been able to eat a thing all day - I’ve more than made up for it on the drink front though. Apparently, my main duty is to give you all an introduction to the groom. This part of the best man’s speech is usually just an excuse to demolish the groom’s good character. Now I’ve thought about this and don’t see any reason to break with tradition. But it’s actually not that easy because Larry is a nice fellow; he obeys all local ordinances, he pays his taxes and he keeps the city tidy - so there is not much I can embarrass him with. However, he does have a few quirks! And if you know Larry well you will already be familiar with them. But for those of you on Pamela's side who are just getting to know him - be on the look out for the following ‘odd’ behavior this evening: 1. Jumping on people’s feet – of course, Larry calls it dancing and if it is, he’s perfected the non-rhythm method. The head looks one way; the body another and the feet kick out. I can only liken it to a bad version of ‘Riverdance’. 2. Frowning during photographs – although I must admit he did raise a smile when his picture was taken outside the church this morning. Probably because this is the first wedding he’d been to where he could walk out without putting any money on the plate. 3. Sniffing wine - if you are in his company when he starts doing this be prepared for a discussion on the body, roundness, and smoothness of his tipple. When he starts saying things like ‘multi-layered’ finish’ and lingering complexity, it’s time to make your get away. 4. Vanishing into thin air - there could be three reasons for this. He’s snuck off to watch his beloved team’s first home game of the season.

A Cop’s Life Essay

I use to dream of being a cop , Its really tempting for most of the kids when they see someone in uniform, zooming through the streets in a cruiser with flashing lights .I always thought that to be cop all it takes is a good built and a brave heart .I am sure even for you A cop is a brave good looking person in uniform who helps to keep the city streets crime free , who makes sure that that the violators of traffic gets a ticket .This story I read was a real eye opener for me and changed my way of thinking about a officers job profile completely . I never thought that the officers go through so much emotional trauma while doing their jobs. These men in black are not only brave physically but very brave mentally as well .It’s not an easy job to see a young kid drenched in blood die in your arms and you are so helpless that you can’t save his life . While the officer is waiting for the ambulance its traumatizing because he could remember that kid from the college basketball game or late night traffic check last week. It does not end for him here; he has to give the message of the young guy’s death to his parents. Imagine coming home, and not having the slightest clue to where your teen is, or has been all night. The doorbell finally rings after waiting and waiting for hours, yet it’s not your son or daughter standing in front of you, it’s a deputy officer. It’s obviously hard on the parents to hear about their child dying in a car accident due to a foolish mistake, but it’s harder for a father of two young kids to break it to them. The writer of this story did a phenomenal job in explaining every little detail of the story. From the curve of the highway, to the position of the dead body. I was able to read a single sentence and picture everything in my head right away because of the unique description. This story has a great moral value, as well as the effects on others because of one choice you might make just for the heck of it. Drunk driving isn’t anyone elses fault, and nobody should have to suffer because of a mistake you made. A Cop’s Life Essay In â€Å"A Cop’s Life† Heather MacDonald describes the media’s blinding prejudices when it comes to policing and race and supported it with two different cop’s life stories. First is about a black man who was shot dead by a cop who was trying to restrain him because he was running naked through traffic pounding cars and received only two mentions in the press outside Seattle. MacDonald compared this story to an angry-cop case that has been videotaped slugging a cuffed black teen once in the head who received 370 stories in the event and flooded the nation’s airwaves and presses. The author describes how being accused of racism affects a cop to do his job. In today’s world, due to a continuous competition in news and media industry, it seems like most of the news that is coming out today are reconstructed to a way that it will attract more people. And due to the fact that for some reasons, bad news are more catchy than good news and that influential people like policemen are more interesting to talk about, a lot of people are being mislead by media’s bias information. I would take the example used by the author in this article as my example. It is an incident of a police officer who has been forced to use his power to stop a civilian who is doing an unlawful violent behavior. The whole story was not out in the news which includes the behavior of the civilian before and just after the latter was cuffed. The only video that they represented was when the civilian was thrown on the hood, but the earlier part that should supposedly concludes the reason why the police officer has to do it was never presented. It was this type of bias reporting that left the police officer guilty and no way to defend himself. Being a cop is not easy for it requires commitment, responsibilities and dedication. Civilians look at you as a perfect person who are not allowed to commit a single mistake and that all of the things that you will be doing should be at the right thing, that is why when a cop is linked to an incident wherein the cop’s image is being affected that would make a history and will be talked in news in different forms. Cops will be assaulted, cursed at, assaulted and even shot at but they can never strike back. Bias opinions by the media should stop and the heroic deeds of the cops should be recognized. Part 2 1. Harlem Renaissance started last 1920 in New York as part of the African American History and it gave birth to new talents like Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston and Paul Robenson. 2. â€Å"Unconscious† made Sigmund Freud famous as he published books and an article explaining this type of human’s condition. According to him this is a part of an individual’s personality that they cannot control. He also conducted series of Psychoanalysis to people with different ages which supported his beliefs. 3. Watchers might perambulate around the place where the incident happened that is why peace officers protected the throughway. 4. Police officers practice professionalism despite of the large number of tasks being assigned to them. References Heather Mac Donald. â€Å"A Cop’s Life† July 23, 2002. Free Essays on Domestic Partners And Benefits

Benefits and Domestic Partners â€Å"Diversity† has been an increasingly popular buzzword in the workplace over the last several years. Traditionally, approaches to diversity primarily referred to the manner in which companies addressed legislative and regulatory issues of equal employment opportunity and affirmative action related to race and gender. In today’s business culture, diversity has become a strategy that will increase a company’s ability to remain competitive in the face of changing demographics and the rapid globalization of business. Many companies, both public and private, have recognized the need to take advantage of the variety of skills and experiences that today’s diverse workforce offers. Recognition of this diversity has brought to the forefront new issues that employers must address. Equitably managing the employee benefits portion of a compensation package is one such issue. Since employee benefits can account for 30 to 40 percent of an employee’s co mpensation, the manner in which these benefits are offered and administered can have a significant impact for both the employer and the employee (Isaacson 1). In particular, the issue of offering domestic partner benefits has caused considerable debate. "Domestic partnership" is defined in this paper as two adults in an ongoing, emotional and financial relationship similar to a marriage, who cannot legally marry or who are not married.
